Fiddy Semba Prasetya
, a Fisheries and Marine Sciences student of the Padjadjaran University, was selected as one of the Indonesian delegates to Eco-Minds based on his holistic approach to attaining a sustainable river basin. His idea takes into account topography, technology, education, administration, and industry participation.
Wini Rizkining Ayu is a Mathematics and Science student of the Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta of Indonesia. Based on current trends, she offers three solutions for sustaining a river basin: first, the planting of perennial trees in housing and industrial sectors to escalate water retention levels; second, the switch from upland farming to paddy fields owing to the latter’s higher flood retention level; and third, the campaign to reduce pollutants from domestic farming and the industrial sector.
Mutiara Arumsari
is taking up International Relations at the University of Indonesia. She proposes a people-centered approach for a sustainable river basin. Her idea is to establish a sub-district community consisting of concerned people, and promote a dialogue among stakeholders for the short and long term planning of the river basin. At the implementation stage, she recommends financial grants from industries and local government alongside the technical and management support from NGOs, with the government providing a mechanism of reward and punishment for the community as well as the industries.
